Synagis

A few posts ago I talked about how Edison gets medicaid and WIC because of his preemie-ness. It has truly been a help. I'm not even talking about the food aspect, although with the rising costs that little extra help has been awesome. The main thing that has been fantastic is the medicaid.

Edison hasn't had any truly major health issues since coming home. He still has some hiccups in his breathing where he will pause for a breath or choke a little, but he always brings himself into a normal rhythm right away and recovers. I have also been taking him back for reflux issues since he is just so unhappy with eating. With those appointments we have had to get medication to help. Speaking of Edison medications... since he came home from the NICU he has been visited every month from a home nurse to get his synagis shot. He was supposed to be done in March but because of the crud going around and the small cold he has right now the doctor thought it best to get another. So they sent the meds and nurse and happy day Medicaid took care of the balance our insurance did not. yay rah.

Little bottle of meds, BIG price!

Enter potential problem... I got a letter saying that the medicaid is being canceled because he no longer receives SSI payments (he never really got any for the record.. just one). This is really not a huge deal.. but when the nurses were here I asked what the likelihood would be that Edison would need another shot. Luckily she said it is rare, but the need does occur based on the illnesses going around and the patients needs. Again, not a huge deal except those shots cost $5000 each. yes, that's right... five THOUSAND. Fortunately our insurance does cover A LOT of this, but we are still left with a little over $450. That is still a hefty price. Who would have thought such a small vile of meds could cost so much! I am very thankful for it because I think it has worked. We haven't even gone out anywhere, I haven't been sick, and Lilly hasn't been sick but Edison gt 2 colds. How does that happen???

Obviously we'll get by if he needs another one and this isn't a 'poor me, whatever shall we do???' post. It's just kind of a kick in the hiney because all of the DHS people said he would get those benefits for the whole first year of his life. So hopefully  Edison gets over his issues and doesn't need any more medical attention than his well child exams.
