Poor unsuspecting rodents…

Yesterday I ran over to my moms for a bit to grab some Tastefully Simple things she had. I am participating as a vendor in a fundraiser for the local Camp Bow Wow. They are running an event to benefit Little Paws Dog Rescue, Protégé Canine Rescue, and Camp Bow Wow's Bow Wow Buddies Foundation. I figure they are all worthy causes and I am such a sucker for dogs that I always, ALWAYS cry at those commercials for animal rescue. The starving children in other countries never phases me though, hmmm.

Anyway… I don’t keep an inventory and since my Tastefully Simple motivation has been lacking I don’t even have much for a display, eep. Cue good old mom who has done parties and never uses the stuff had some standard line items I can throw on the table for a display. I decided to hang around and chat a bit AND I took Bailey over to spend a couple days. The dog needs a break. I seriously think she has aged 10 years in the past 3 months. Lilly is unrelenting with the antagonistic attitude and always wanting to play. So in an effort to get Bailey in a better mood, she gets a vacation. I don’t even get a vacation.

One of Baileys favorite things to do, being a dog, is to stare out the window into the wonderland that is a foreign backyard. And my moms backyard is a haven for birds, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and even a neighborhood raccoon. (not too excited about that last one mind you). She decided she wanted to experience the joy this yard brings firsthand instead of through the window so, unthinking, I let her out. I spent about 30 seconds after I saw her dash at a speed across the yard that a puma would be proud of worrying what she was chasing. “Oh crap, was it the raccoon. My poor Bailey. Oh please don’t let her get hurt.” Thoughts like those.

It wasn’t the dog I needed to worry about. I decided to go out and see what she was up to. I never give my dog enough credit. I have had 2 other really stupid dogs that cant catch a fly when sitting in their open mouth so I figure Bailey wouldn’t be much better at catching random wild rodents. WRONG. I get outside just in time to see her go for this last lunge on some animal. I honestly didn’t know what it was until I got closer. That was one HUGE rabbit. Oh the poor unsuspecting rabbit.

I shrieked at Bailey to leave it, LEAVE IT! she cowered off a few steps away but stayed close enough that if I moved a certain way she could sneak behind me fast to check out her kill. The rabbit at this point was lying on its stomach looking okay but shocked. I walked over to Bailey to get her to move further away, her darting the opposite direction each time.

Then the rabbit did this huge sideways stretch flop thing. I have had to put 2 dogs to sleep in my life. I know what that ‘last gasp of breath before death’ looks like. dead. The poor innocent rabbit was just happily sitting under its bush. Even when there was a dog in the yard those poor rodents had such a false sense of security established because Winnie was too old to care about any of them, let alone chase them.

Bailey spent a good hour and a half inside barking tail wagging ears perked and on a general sense of high alert. She wanted to get back outside to check out her kill, her prize. She was so proud and happier than I have seen her in ages.

well… goal accomplished.
